Abstract
The Strait of Gibraltar (SoG) is one of the major navigation areas in the world. The maritime traffic registered in the area is approximately 110,000 ship movements per year. Unfortunately the area is facing numerous accidents involving collisions. The aim of this paper is to carry out a risk analysis for maritime traffic in the SoG based on the accidents statistics, AIS data and dedicated software such as IWRAP. On the basis of the outcomes, we investigate two risk control options (RCOs) focused in changes in the current TSS. Finally, we found that the level of risk collision in this area could be effectively reduced with the application of one of the RCOs investigated.
